Today was the day we were supposed to try to summit Cradle Mountain, but we only ended up getting as high as Crater Peak (1284 meters). Actually, the park rangers talked us out of trying to summit the day before, saying that there was still too much snow and run off to do it safely. He was probably more right than wrong, but it’s likely we could have done it. The weather was certainly in our favor today, although we did find ourselves with soaking wet feet from slogging through knee-deep snow and hiking paths turned to ankle-deep Spring melt streams. In the end, though, we spent almost 5 hours hiking here today…and looking for platypuses.
First things first, a Tasmanian Devil (only one we saw...).

Washed out trail and knee-deep snow leading to the summit...

Crater Lake, the deepest glacial lake in the world. The aborigines here believed all life came from the lake.

A wallaby...

Of all the wildlife we encountered, we liked these things the least...this one chased Kristin around trying to eat her trail mix.

Kristin and Tony and mountain...

The pond at the lodge.
